08/06/2021
With the goals of researching and providing methods to help the self-learn process of Language students to become more efficient, on July 22, the UEF Faculty of Languages and International Cultures held an Inter-Faculty-Institute Scientific Webinar with the subject "The Methods of improving the self-learn ability for Japanese, Korean and Chinese Language students."
The Webinar was held with the participation of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ngo Cao Cuong – Permanent Vice President of the University, Mr. Nguyen Pham Hai Ha – Vice Director of the Institute of Graduate Education, Science and Technology, Dr. Vo Van Thanh Than – Dean of the Faculty of Languages and International Cultures, Mr. Pham Huynh Anh Viet – President of the Center of Japanese Language, Vietnam - Japan Institute of Technology - Hutech University, Dr. Nguyen Thi Lan – Head of the Chinese Language, as well as the faculty members participated in the research paper topics.

The Webinar was held with the participation of teachers from the Faculty of Languages

There were 19 research paper topics conducted and reported in the Seminar, and four of which were selected to be presented at the Webinar including (1) “Improving the self-learn ability for UEF Japanese Language students”, (2) “Survey on the Use-of-Verb mistakes made by UEF Chinese Language students ”, (3) “Solutions for students to gain more interests in approaching Japanese – Vietnamese translation and interpretation from common senses (basic counting particles)”, (4) “Language practice from the audiovisual method for Japanese Language students”.
Topic 1 presented by Ms. Ly Nhu Quynh highlighted the influence of self-education on the Japanese Language students and gave solutions to improve it. Some of these solutions were given by lecturers, students, Unions, and UEF’s Clubs.

Solutions to improve self-education for Language students

Ms. Truong Ngoc Quynh’s Topic 2 analyzed students’ common mistakes in using synonyms and verbs in Chinese and suggested specific solutions for lecturers and students. Accordingly, it is necessary for teachers to provide students a study environment using the target language, which should be carefully compared with their mother tongue. Regarding students, it is important to be aware of the problems and continuously enhance their foreign language mindset.
Topic 3 presented by Ms. Le Nguyen Minh Thanh from Vietnam - Japan Institute of Technology, Hutech University, highlighted solutions for students of Japanese – Vietnamese translation, and since then indicated the significant role of self-education in accessing new and complicated knowledge.

Suggestions for audiovisual method in language learning

In Topic 4 Ms. Nguyen Thi Ha – a teacher at Marie Curie High School, mentioned the audiovisual method in Japanese Language study. She analyzed the process, advantages, and disadvantages of this method, and made suggestions on practicing Japanese with this method in teaching and learning.
To sum up, self-education is vital for Language students since studying language requires analysis and memorization. Students are more likely to be in trouble grasping and mastering their target languages if they lack the ability to self-learn.

The Webinar resulted in plenty of possible methods. This is the foundation for teachers to apply in teaching and promoting students to form self-learning discipline and achieve high grades by it.
