More than 40 UEF students attended the workshop series “Think coherently - Understand news” on December 11th, 15th and 18th organized by Center of Service-Learning with sponsorship from the project News Literacy.
The purpose of the workshop was to help students raise awareness in critical thinking as well as apply it into verifying information and become discerning readers.
Workshop “Think coherently - Understand news” occurred in 3 days
Critical thinking is one of the effective methods for enhancing the quality of thinking and is especially useful when used during the learning process. Finding the source of issues is another benefit of critical thinking in addition to helping us see things from a variety of angles.
Vice director of the UEF Center of Service-Learning, Ms. Dinh Nguyen Thien An was with us in the first class “Critical thinking - Behavior on Social networks”. She provided us with many engaging activities that helped us readily approach the concept of critical thinking.

Built on the basic knowledge, students experienced using critical thinking to verify information, evaluate the objectivity and reliability of news and detect fake news under the direction of Ms.Thien An. Additionally, we understood how to identify the barriers of the objective viewpoints.

Observed carefully to verify information
With the assistance of Mr. Nguyen Dung Hung Anh - Coordinator of the Center of Service-Learning, we were guided in using technological tools to check fake photos in the following class.
The useful tools provided in the content class enabled us to get a greater awareness about fake images and videos as well as the consequences of “distorting” image content. However, our own thinking and caution while sharing information/images remain the most effective tool for image verification.

Mr.Nguyen Thanh Trung - the Project Manager of Giac Mo Phim was in charge of another fascinating content of the training series. In this context, we were quite enthusiastic when we took part in the activity “Pha an cung phim” with Mr.Trung because of getting surprises.
Mr.Trung used the plot of a popular movie to show the vastly varied viewpoints of each character, especially in the work, helping you to grasp bias. As a result, bias and prejudice were known as a natural instinct that exists in numerous events, including the news. One of the basic steps in improving critical thinking is understanding prejudice.

Ms.Dang Thi Kim Chi - Vice Project Manager News Literacy attended the workshop
The development of technology and social networking sites led to many changes in the field of media. In order to provide more information, news production processes are being simplified more and more, but this has also led to a rise of fake news. Learning how to verify information not only helps students become discerning readers, but also creates effective filters to protect friends and family members from the negative impacts of fake news.
