Discovering the Secrets to Optimize Scores in IELTS Writing Task 1

12/10/2025

In the journey to conquer IELTS, writing skills always require a combination of analytical thinking and precise expression. This is something that many students still struggle with during daily practice.

Understanding these difficulties, on the morning of December 10, the Faculty of English organized English Workshop 4 with the theme “IELTS Writing Task 1 Overviews: How to Maximize Your Task Achievement Band Score,” providing UEFers with an in-depth academic space to explore how to optimize their writing effectiveness. The workshop not only provided knowledge but also opened up new approaches, helping students confidently and methodically enhance their Writing Task 1 skills.

Accompanying the UEFers were ThS. Lê Hoàng Nhi An and ThS. Lê Khánh Hoàng - lecturers from the Faculty of English. From a professional and practical teaching perspective, the instructors helped students dissect the standard structure of a Writing Task 1 response, which consists of three parts: Introduction, Overview, and Body.

Writing Tips and Techniques

If the Introduction serves as a brief opening, the Body is the detailed exploration, while the Overview is the crucial support of the piece that demonstrates the ability to identify trends, compare, and summarize information logically. Therefore, the workshop focused deeply on helping students clearly understand how to implement a coherent, accurate, and optimally effective Overview in their responses.

The two lecturers guided UEFers on how to approach three common types of charts encountered in the exam: line graphs, pie charts, and process diagrams. From analysis and information identification to finding main trends and choosing appropriate vocabulary to present a clear and concise Overview, various important tips were shared, such as how to select representative data, methods for grouping information, and common pitfalls that candidates often fall into.

Interactive Learning

To ensure that students could immediately apply the newly acquired knowledge, the workshop allocated significant time for practical activities. UEFers were assigned tasks directly related to real chart types, after which the instructors provided detailed corrections for each sentence, highlighting common mistakes and guiding students on how to improve. Thanks to the high degree of interaction, many students quickly recognized their writing weaknesses and felt more confident when handling the Overview section.

Through this workshop, UEF students enhanced their analytical thinking, improved their academic writing skills, understood the scoring criteria for IELTS Writing Task 1, and learned how to boost their scores in the Task Achievement section. More importantly, the workshop helped them develop a scientific approach to data observation, utilize coherent language, and build confidence when entering the actual exam.

As English Workshop 4 concluded, it is believed that the knowledge and techniques shared have helped students unravel many “bottlenecks” in their writing practice. The new methods, clearer data interpretation, and reinforced confidence will become an important foundation for students to continue practicing and conquering their IELTS goals. Additionally, the program has inspired UEFers to take the initiative in learning, practicing regularly, and effectively applying insights into their future writings, thereby gradually enhancing their academic capabilities.
