English Workshop 7: Equipping students with natural English communication skills

03/19/2026

To improve students’ ability to use English in academic settings and for international integration, the Faculty of English held English Workshop No. 7 on the morning of March 18, 2026 with the theme “How to Speak English Naturally.” The program attracted many students eager to improve their ability to communicate more naturally, effectively, and confidently.

The workshop featured presentations by Mr. Dang Quang Tam and Mr. Huynh Cong Khanh, two lecturers from the English Department. The speakers offered accessible perspectives to help students understand the true nature of “speaking English naturally.”

The workshop helped students learn methods to practice more natural and fluent English communication

According to the lecturers, speaking English naturally does not mean perfection; it means communicating clearly, fluently, and confidently. Overemphasis on “native-like” pronunciation can sometimes reduce learners’ communicative flexibility. Instead, students should focus on stress, rhythm, and connected speech, since these features make speech sound more natural and easier to understand.

The workshop also emphasized the importance of learning fixed phrases and idioms for everyday communication. Using common collocations correctly helps students express ideas coherently and creates a sense of familiarity and naturalness similar to native speakers.

One core topic was an effective learning process: Listen — Recognize — Practice daily. Students were encouraged to engage frequently with English through varied listening sources, observe how native speakers use the language, and practice persistently to develop conversational reflexes.

Students actively interacted with the lecturers’ activities

The two lecturers also shared three key strategies to improve natural spoken English: listen more, speak regularly, and change learning mindsets. Maintaining a practice routine and building confidence are seen as the “keys” to steady improvement.

The workshop provided useful knowledge and motivation for students to take initiative in practicing English for study and everyday life, preparing them to integrate into international environments. With the methods shared by the lecturers, it is hoped that students will practice actively and speak English more naturally and fluently.
