UEF’s Faculty of English Launches English Workshop Series for the New Academic Year

On the morning of October 1, the Faculty of English held the first English Workshop of the academic year, themed “Cracking Idioms: Fun & Fluency in English”, with enthusiastic participation from a large number of students. This almost monthly event is organized by the Faculty to share knowledge and enhance English skills in a practical, hands-on environment.
 
The workshop was led by two lecturers from the Faculty of English: Mr. Lê Nguyên Lân, MA, and Ms. Lê Thuỵ Thảo Sương, MA.

English idioms are fixed phrases or sentences that carry meanings different from the literal meanings of the individual words, often conveying figurative or metaphorical ideas. They are widely used by native speakers in daily communication to express specific and nuanced meanings.
 
During the workshop, students were guided by the lecturers on how to use idioms effectively, including when and in which contexts they are appropriate. Idioms typically enhance the quality of writing and speaking skills.

Through group practice activities, students learned and absorbed numerous common idioms, enabling them to use them flexibly in daily communication or in preparation for certification exams.
 
Using idioms in English is not about quantity but about appropriateness and naturalness. Consistent practice helps students sharpen their skills and memorize more idioms effectively.

The insights and guidance from the lecturers undoubtedly helped students gain a deeper understanding of using idioms in English and identify more effective learning methods. Proficiency and flexible use of appropriate idioms also serve as a foundation for students to improve their scores in international certification exams.
