UEF Students Explore Modern Financial Foundations with Lecturer from MILA University (Malaysia)

09/23/2025
With the aim of broadening modern financial perspectives and creating opportunities for international academic exchange, on the afternoon of July 23, the Faculty of Finance and Accounting at UEF collaborated with MILA University (Malaysia) to host a special extracurricular session titled “Cost of Capital – A Fundamental in Financial Decisions”.
The session was led by Ms. Nurul Shafina binti Khairudin – lecturer from MILA University – with the support of Mr. Trần Ngọc Thanh, MA – lecturer from UEF’s Faculty of Finance and Accounting. Through an engaging, relatable, and practical presentation style, the two lecturers guided students on a journey to explore core concepts in corporate finance, particularly the “cost of capital” as a strategic factor in business investment and development decisions.

The class provided valuable financial knowledge from an international perspective

The cost of capital is regarded as the minimum rate of return a business must achieve to ensure the efficiency and sustainability of an investment project. More than just a calculated figure, it reflects the effectiveness of capital utilization, enabling businesses to make strategic choices and optimize value creation.
During the session, students explored three main topics: understanding the concept and role of cost of capital in financial operations; analyzing its two key components – cost of debt and cost of equity; and methods of determining Weighted Average Cost of Capital (WACC), which measures the average return a company needs when using both debt and equity financing. These seemingly complex theories were made accessible through practical examples, making them easier to understand and remember.

The key topics were delivered during the session

The class atmosphere became lively thanks to the active engagement of UEF students, who confidently raised questions, exchanged viewpoints, and participated in discussions with the lecturers. This spirit of active learning contributed significantly to the success of the session, sparking interest and passion for finance and investment among students.

The two lecturers accompanied and shared their insights with the students

Beyond providing solid foundational knowledge, the academic exchange served as a meaningful milestone in UEF’s journey of international academic collaboration. Such experiences allow students to gain insights from advanced educational systems while gradually building a strong foundation to meet future professional challenges, particularly in the ever-evolving global financial sector.
