Motivation 4.0 in the Digital Era: Sustaining Engagement - Inspiring Others - Driving Performance

10/16/2025
In the era of Industry 4.0 where artificial intelligence, data, and digital platforms are reshaping the way people work, the concept of “motivation” has also taken on new meaning. It is no longer limited to encouragement or rewards, but rather a journey of sustaining passion, unlocking intrinsic potential, and connecting individuals through inspiration and shared values. This spirit was strongly conveyed through the thematic seminar series “Motivation 4.0 - Sustaining Engagement and Driving Performance in the Digital Era” organized by the Faculty of Business Administration in the past semester.

The seminar series featured speakers including Dr. Mach Tran Huy - HR Director at UEF; Mr. Pham Thanh Hai - Co-Founder of Entertainment Marketing & Advertising Solutions; M.A. Tran Thanh Huy - Vice Director of the UEF Center for Corporate Relations; Mr. Nguyen Chi Thanh - Director of Southern Customer Relations at Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT); Ms. Tran Phuong Nga - Senior HR Consultant at Success Partner Consulting Company and Mr. Huynh Phuc Nguyen Thinh - Vice Head of Investment Project Supervision and Management Division under the Management Board of Export Processing and Industrial Zones.

The thematic seminar series provides diverse practical perspectives on Motivation 4.0

According to speaker Nguyen Chi Thanh, motivation is the energy that drives purposeful, persistent, and emotional action. Each individual possesses a “life vehicle,” where mission, aspirations, and core values function as the engine propelling them forward. Similarly, within organizations, the “enterprise vehicle” operates on the same principle: when individuals clearly understand their purpose, they can generate strong internal motivation.

He emphasized that maintaining motivation requires leaders to understand three levels of energy: extrinsic (salary and rewards), intrinsic (joy and passion), and the highest level, purpose (derived from contributing and creating value for society). When leaders can connect with this highest level, employees will work not only for personal goals but also for shared values.

From another perspective, speaker Huynh Phuc Nguyen Thinh analyzed the challenges of “sustaining engagement” in digital work environments. As technology transforms communication, collaboration, and working methods, the role of leadership becomes increasingly critical.“Technology is a tool; people remain at the center”, he affirmed.

He also highlighted that the new workforce, particularly Generation Z, seeks meaningful emotional connections in the workplace. They value flexibility, purpose, development opportunities, and fairness in recognition, key factors for managers to both enhance performance and foster long-term engagement.

Ms. Tran Phuong Nga emphasized that sustainable motivation stems from three core elements: purpose, autonomy, and mastery, not merely financial incentives. To sustain engagement and drive performance, leaders in the 4.0 era must shift from traditional management approaches to creating employee experiences through personalization, instant feedback, and Agile organizational culture.

Practical tools introduced included the OKR model to enhance purpose, Agile culture to develop mastery, and the application of AI and data analytics to proactively identify burnout risks.

Speakers Mach Tran Huy, Pham Thanh Hai, and Tran Thanh Huy further expanded the discussion by connecting the concept of “Motivation 4.0” with real business practices.

In the context of hybrid work where the boundaries between work and personal life are increasingly blurred, managers must learn not only to “sustain engagement” but also to “inspire.” Dr. Mach Tran Huy highlighted the importance of digital transformation in human resource management, emphasizing that HR data should not be viewed merely as numbers, but as “emotional footprints” that help managers better understand employee behavior and needs.

Mr. Pham Thanh Hai focused on flexible thinking and emotional connection, suggesting that motivation in the digital era requires a combination of technological tools and emotional intelligence (EQ). Meanwhile, M.A. Tran Thanh Huy emphasized that: “Sustainable performance can only be achieved when employees feel recognized, heard, and provided with opportunities for development.”

In the digital era, while technology enables people to work more intelligently, it is emotions, recognition, and a spirit of companionship that sustain organizational growth. “Motivation 4.0” is therefore not merely a leadership skill, but a human-centered philosophy in people management. When individuals feel heard, respected, and inspired, they become the most powerful source of energy driving organizations forward in digital transformation and sustainable development.

The practical insights shared by industry experts also help students gain a clearer understanding of real-world business contexts, thereby strengthening their readiness for future careers.
