[Reference books for IR] - Week 14 - “Realism in Practice”, Davide Orsi, J. R. Avgustin & Max Nurnus

25/04/2022

The purpose of the book "Realism in Practice" is to assess the relevance and validity of realism as an interpretive tool in contemporary International Relations. All chapters of the book attempt to define the conceptual aspects of realism. The content of the book deals with important issues in contemporary world politics through the lens of realism such as the refugee crisis in Europe and the Middle East; the fight against ISIS; the presence of non-state actors; the rise of China; network security; human rights and humanitarian law. The work also provides theoretical analysis and interpretation of the branches of realism: that is, classical realism and structural realism. Accordingly, classical realism seeks to explain national behavior through factor analysis at the individual level, while structural realism ) emphasizes the system analysis level. Overall, the work has proven that realism still offers a multifaceted perspective on world politics and illuminates the growing challenges of the global political picture.

The content of the book will be a reference source for students studying International Relations Theory, Introduction to International Relations.

The 14th week of the Reference books for IR project would like to introduce to you the Book Chapter Review written by Mr. Dong Minh Quang, Faculty of International Relations, University of Economics and Finance, Ho Chi Minh City.
