Culture and Global Issues in Language Education for UEFers

JANUARY 13 - UEF International Institute partnered with the Faculty of English to successfully co-hosted the workshop “Global issues in Language Education”, aiming to provide students with intensive knowledge about TEFL certification, the in-depth difference between TEFL and TESOL certification along with the culture and global issues in language education. On top of that, students who wish to pursue higher education were given more information regarding TESOL Master's Degree postgraduate studies.

This special event featured the resource speakers, who were, Prof. Arran Stibbe, Course Leader in English Language and Linguistics, the University of Gloucestershire; Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Vu, Vice President of Hoa Sen University, Chairman of STESOL - Association of Vietnam Universities and Colleges.

Dr. Do Huu Nguyen Loc, Vice President and Director of the UEF International Institute, Dr. Pham Thi Anh Ngoc, Deputy Director of the UEF International Institute were the representatives from UEF.

The two speakers provided plenty of useful knowledge for students

At the workshop, Prof. Arran Stibbe spoke on "TEFL: Culture and Global Issues". As TEFL stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language, those acquiring this certificate are eligible to teach English to non-English speakers. Along with that, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Vu spoke about "From Second Life to the Facebook Metaverse: Implications for Language Education", which illustrated the use of the virtual reality in education.

Global issues in English teaching

TESOL is an internationally recognized course providing English educators, who are expected to graduate with strong communication skills, with up-to-date methodologies for teaching the English language. Consequently, they can provide their students with English-learning environments in the range of examining, recognizing, applying principles and theories of language acquisition to develop lesson plans; delivering interesting lessons that elicit more interaction; motivating and encouraging students properly.

During the Workshop, students can distinguish these two certificates, understand more about their advantages, and the applicability of virtual reality technology in teaching English. Additionally, students were instructed on transnational study of Master in TESOL organized in partnership between UEF and the University of Gloucestershire.

Active interaction between the speakers and students

This informative workshop successfully gave students insights and encouraged them in achieving these two certificates which will boost up students’ confidence on the path of learning and achieving these qualifications, which is a strong foundation for them to promote career prospects and become global citizens.
