Plus 3 students kick off field learning with a visit to GreenViet’s sustainable development model

06/18/2025

MAY 13, students from the University of Pittsburgh, currently participating in the Plus 3 study abroad program at UEF, embarked on their first field trip to GreenViet, one of Vietnam’s leading green building consultancy firms.

More than just an academic excursion, the visit offered students valuable insight into business practices in a developing country—where local identity and sustainable strategies play a vital role in corporate success.

Local mindset – A competitive edge in the global market

Though operating with a team of just around 30 employees, GreenViet has impressively captured 50% of the green building market share in Vietnam—a figure that left many international students both surprised and impressed. During the session, Mr. Do Huu Nhat Quang, Co-Founder and Business Development Director of GreenViet, not only shared the company’s startup journey but also emphasized their “slow but steady” growth philosophy, which centers on focusing first and foremost on the domestic market.

Dr. Nguyen Kim Thoa – Deputy Director of UEF International Institute presented flowers and a token of appreciation to the enterprise

After the visit, Anqi Zhu shared her impression: “GreenViet is well aware of its limitations when competing with major corporations from the U.S., Japan, or Germany, which already possess advanced technologies and economies of scale. Rather than engaging in direct global competition, the company chose to build a strong foundation in the domestic market, focusing on quality and customer satisfaction. I think this is a very smart and sustainable approach.”
The “Vietnam First” spirit was a recurring message emphasized by Mr. Nhật Quang throughout the discussion. With a fully local team of Vietnamese engineers, GreenViet not only optimizes costs but also maintains flexibility across projects. The company pursues continuous technological innovation while seizing every opportunity for collaboration — even with small-scale projects. This strategy has helped GreenViet gradually build a solid network of partners both at home and abroad, paving the way for larger-scale ventures in the future.

Students from the University of Pittsburgh noted that GreenViet’s deep understanding of the local market and commitment to exceeding customer expectations have helped the company leave a strong impression.
“They don’t just deliver what clients ask for — they go beyond, offering added value. That’s why customers trust them and continue to collaborate. This is the key factor behind GreenViet’s popularity in Vietnam,” Anqi Zhu concluded.

Valuable lessons from a local enterprise amid global uncertainties

From the perspective of international students, another highlight at GreenViet is its ability to adapt to the fluctuations of the global market. In a world economy marked by uncertainty — particularly in the face of shifting tariff policies — GreenViet has managed to stay resilient by operating in a long-term and essential field: sustainable development.

“The visit to GreenViet was truly an amazing experience and gave me one of my first insights into how a startup is structured, managed, and the kind of global impact it can have,” shared student Chloe Acuna.

Student Wyatt Huston expressed his admiration for how GreenViet capitalizes on modern demands for increasingly sustainable systems in warehouses, residential areas, and industrial buildings—while keeping most of its operations local. “GreenViet is clearly a highly effective enterprise. Even though this is our first visit, I can already tell that Vietnam’s business culture and national identity are major driving forces behind its economic development,” he shared.

As the first company visit in their study tour at UEF, GreenViet offered the Pitt students more than just a look at a successful enterprise. It painted a vivid picture of innovation, adaptability, and the confidence of Vietnamese businesses operating on their home ground. Through stories told by the company, students gained a deeper understanding of “green buildings” and were inspired by a spirit of continuous learning—something they believe will serve as a guiding principle for sustainable growth in their future careers.

Throughout the two-week program, the U.S. students will continue to explore Vietnam’s academic environment, culture, and everyday life alongside UEFers. The journey includes themed classes on Vietnamese culture, economy, and environment, company visits, cultural and sports exchanges, culinary adventures, and local life experiences in Ho Chi Minh City and nearby provinces.
