Students were attracted by the scale and systemic nature of the enterprise. Coherent has been the largest laser manufacturer sold in the United States over the past 50 years, utilizing a vertical integration approach, from self-sourcing raw materials and production to the final product. This closed production model helps Coherent effectively control product quality, optimize costs, and proactively respond to global market fluctuations.
After the exchange session, students were given a tour of the production sites, thermal sensor departments, microchip manufacturing, and more. Most of the work is still done manually but within a modern environment involving complex chemical reactions.
The Plus 3 student delegation continued their practical learning journey at Coherent Vietnam
Concluding the visit, Quang Huynh (a University of Pittsburgh student) described Coherent in three words: "independent, innovative, and incredible". He emphasized that: "Coherent is unique because it is fully vertically integrated and owns the common sourcing, manufacturing, and creation of products, making it less susceptible to external trends like tariffs".
Additionally, international students were impressed with Coherent's philosophy of human development and corporate culture , which clearly demonstrates investment in employee welfare through practical programs, encouraging the spread of ideas, and improving the company for the future.
Many valuable lessons were drawn from the trip
Student Kennedy Aderogba expressed interest in the human aspect and the connection between technology and labor. He shared: "A part of the tour that really stood out to me was what it would be like to manufacture some of the labor-intensive components. This is one of the reasons why Coherent is expanding its operations to countries like China and Vietnam." Although facing fluctuations such as tariff policies from the U.S., the students all agreed that Coherent is still operating a long-term strategy in Vietnam.
Not only did they gain a beneficial amount of knowledge about technology and manufacturing, but the trip also left memorable experiences of a modern, humane working environment. This is also clear proof that learning goes hand-in-hand with practical experience, helping international students gain a deeper understanding of the business and manufacturing environment in Vietnam.
