On 20th of April, The Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics and Finance hosted a seminar entitled “Trans-Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership (TPP) – New challenges in international trade for Vietnam”. The seminar addressed a popular topic in current affairs and attracted several economic experts from associations, businesses, universities and research institutes.

In his opening speech, Dr. Nguyen Thanh Giang – UEF’s President said: “International economic integration has become a global trend. A range of international trade organizations has been founded. TPP, in particular, is a new generation of free trade agreement with a comprehensive, open, insightful and humane approach. Participating in TPP brings new opportunities and challenges to our economy. So what have Vietnamese businesses done to prepare for dealing with the pros and cons of this? Hopefully, this seminar will generate constructive and practical contributions from all those present here.”

Other issues discussed include the active update of businesses on current policies, which would help them build suitable operation strategies so as to make the most out of opportunities and successfully deal with challenges.

“TPP (Trans - Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership) is a newly established free trade organization. Negotiation officially concluded on October 5, 2015 in the US and signing took place on February 4, 2016 in New Zealand. Its distinguished feature lies in deeper and more comprehensive integration than previous global and regional trade agreements (WTO, AFTA, NAFTA, APEC, ASEAN (AEC), etc.) As of now, TPP has only 12 member countries, including Vietnam.
